Tomb Raider: Junior Movie Novelisation Review

Based on the same-titled movie released in 2001, Mel Odom's novelization of the Angelina Jolie flick is top-notch, enveloping every quality that made the archaeologist one of the most popular icons of the video game franchise.
Lara Croft observes the first third of a complete planet alignment - an event that happens once every five thousand years - through the high-tech telescope at her home, Croft Manor. Little did she know, only hours later, she would become an integral part in protecting the alignment's omnipotent power from ill-intended hands.

Through her deceased father's gift of a planetary clock, she travels from one exotic location to another to locate the pieces of the power's medium, a triangle emblazoned with the All-Seeing Eye, the Masonic symbol of omniscience. But an internal desire to see her father again brings her motives to locate the triangle halves into question. If she finds the pieces, will she use the power it contains for herself? Or will she snatch the godly control away from her foes and bury its abilities for another five thousand years?

Odom's literary portrayal is accurate and engrossing, detailing the emotional impact of each event and discovery, someting that may be lacked in the film version. Rather than drooling over Angelina Jolie, Raider fans can envision the described settings and locales in the book with relative ease, with every exotic touch in place. There are only very slight changes in the book, such as Croft enemy (or perhaps not) Alex West's naked romp from the shower to the bedroom in response to mysteriously lurking shadows (provided by Croft, of course); that differs from the movie's ending locale of the dining room and its strategically placed dining table.

But the story proceeds with the same heart-pounding action and romantic passion that's found in the box-office seller. Though short, it makes the reader feel as though they are in Croft's military-booted shoes, even as much as the video games do.

- T.C. Robson

Tomb Raider: Junior Movie Novelisation Overview

Lara Croft, also known as the "Tomb Raider" has criss-crossed the globe to uncover some magnificent artefacts. Her no-nonsense attitude has kept her alive in some of the most dangerous trouble spots on Earth. But a treasure and puzzle hidden in her own mansion could be her greatest challenge yet.

Highly recommended seller - Emma J. Tan -
Product arrived in good shape and very, very promptly. Seller communication was excellent and very willing. Especially impressed by the swift delivery (roughly 3 days) as per request due to necessity. Highly recommended.

Excellent! The movie followed the book very well too. - Detra Fitch - USA
Long ago a meteor fell onto Earth with a magical, metallic form within it. Witnessing its power, it was forged into the (thought of) holy form of a triangle and a temple was formed to protect it. A city grew around the temple, The People of the Light were there. During an invasion, the nine planets aligned and the power of the Triangle was shown. Realizing no mortal should possess such power, the High Priest ordered it cut into two smaller triangles. One stayed at the temple. The other was hidden at the end of the Earth. However, the Craftsman who cut the Triangle in half secretly made a highly advanced device. It could serve as a guide to find the hidden piece, and preserve the Triangle's powers for future generations. It was a magic clock.

Lady Lara Croft was much like her father had been. Beginning with a clock he had hidden for her to find someday and tales he had told her as a child, she must set out to save the world. The Illuminati, a secret group of powerful people, were out to find the two triangle pieces before the planets aligned (which happened only once every 5,000 years). At her side was Mr. Hillary, her butler, and Bryce, her technician. Two tombs must be entered and survived or the world would belong to Manfred Powell.

***** I made that brief as possible, but left out much to do it. Even though the movie, as of now, has not been released, I can already tell that the book gives much more insight to Lara and the adventure in which she finds herself. However, many scenes have the potential to be much more vivid and exciting on the big screens! I found it to be a wonderful book! I plan to be in the theater, with a huge group of friends, on its first night out! *****

Reviewed by Detra Fitch of Huntress Reviews.

A GREAT NOVELIZATION OF THE FEATURE FILM! - -
This book is great. It is just like the movie, only with a little more dialouge. There are even parts before Lara's dad died telling how he tried to stop the evil. The deleted scenes only able to watch on the DVD are in this book, and I thought that was great! The action level seems a little less than the movie. The book seems to just speed by the action and to the point. I didn't really like that factor. If you liked the movie, read the novel, it is GREAT!

The book, like the 1st one, happens around the world. In Escape Key, Rob Zanneli and Tamsyn Smith find a suit in the trash can and a buisness card and a credit card slip in the pocket of the suit. The name on the buisness card says Kelvin Moore. The credit card slip says K.M.Clark. Then, with the help of Tom Peterson, Lauren King, and Mitch Zanelli, Rob, Tamsyn, and Josh Allen find out at an internet show, during a chess game that K.M.Clark and Kelvin Moore are the same person. As soon as Josh loses to a chess grandmaster, when he says checkmate, Tamsyn speaks up and asks Kelvin Moore about his company, checKMate. The police then arrested Kelvin Moore. I don't know why.

They see a man who looks like a bum and then when he goes into the bathroom and changes, he comes out looking like a normal person. They find out the guy is Kevin B. Moore alias K. M. A good guide to a great sim - T. Whigham - Tampa, FL USA
Silent Hunter set the bar by which all other submarine sims are measured. You command a WW2 US navy sub in the south Pacific, chasing freighters, oilers, transports, warships, and conducting espionage and raids on port cities. The manual that comes with the game is fantastic, so there's nothing really much left to tell in this game guide other than how to beat the missions and how to use the thermal layers to hide from the destroyers. As a guide, its a good reference but you'll still need the manual.

Pippin and Peanut: The Adventure Begins Review

Arthur Forst and Renee Patterson have crafted an enjoyable tale with colorful and engaging characters. Children will find the ever-curious Pippin the mouse to be cute and will sympathize with Peanut's efforts to lead her friend back out from within the Internet. Kids will like the interesting and comical situations in which Pippin finds himself and the animals he encounters.

For adults reading to their kids, as I do every evening with my daughter, Forst and Patterson keep up the pace and I found the book quite enjoyable as well. I laughed aloud more than a couple of times.

Pippin and Peanut: The Adventure Begins Overview

Pippin & Peanut is a story of what life would be like if you found yourself inadvertently transported into a computer with no clue if you could (or would) ever return to the "real" world. It is a fantasy that brings readers young and old into another dimension, and unwraps the mysteries of what might actually happen when one travels (literally!) within the World Wide Web.

Marc Andreesson:Web Warrior (Techies) Review

This book is part of an interesting little series that tries to teach or motivate primary schoolers about technology. So that they can make sense of recent events and maybe even one day be attracted to working in a technology job.

Here the book describes Marc Andreesson, who wrote the first public browser, Mosaic. I suspect that the average reader of the book will not have heard of Mosaic, since it was quickly overtaken by newer browsers. Still, the book then goes on to describe how Andreesson went to co-found Netscape with Jim Clark of Silicon Graphics, and the browser wars with Microsoft in the late 90s.

In some ways, this book is also a history of the first decade of the Web. The story of Andreesson is intimately tied with the Web's early and spectacular growth.

This book is better than other stragic books and i hope that your next stragety guide is as easy to read as this is. And if you are the makers of the game also...this is one of the best! Thank You.

The Best Strategy Guide Ever Written - -
This book is the most fun strategy guide I've ever read. Of course the game is really cool too, but the guide reads like a story and is written in the voice of the main character. It really pulls you into the game's story and was way fun to read. More clue books should be written like this!

It's a great movie and it`s a great game, but how hard can it be to make a srategy guide? not very....

Buy the movie instead of this book, it only spoils the fun of finding things out for your self.

Simple Halloween Fun - J. D. Fegler - Chesterfield, VA
I would rate this book as "OK". The ideas aren't terribly clever or anything, but can be helpful for young children in learning how to use the computer for young children. My daughter made a tombstone and enjoyed adding her own choice of names to it. She then cut it out and put it on her door. In this case, we used the "paint" in the "accessories" section of the computer.

Phonics (School Zone Interactive) Review

We found this [...] and used it in our homeschool for my son after he had the basics of reading down. Whether it was this book with the mechanics of reading, or the Magic Treehouse books with the excitement of reading, or probably combined, he went from single-syllable-word books to 5th grade level in a year.
I like how it mentions all the ways to make sounds. For example, when teaching the long "E" sound, it is in one lesson so that the child learns those ways all at once and is not confused when she later learns another way.
I am ordering another for my daughter who has just starting reading those single-syllable-word books, and hope that she will do as well!

Check Out Mysterious Universe: Supernovae, Dark Energy, and Black Holes (Scientists in the Field Series) for $10.33

Mysterious Universe: Supernovae, Dark Energy, and Black Holes (Scientists in the Field Series) Review

"'If it weren't for supernovae, we wouldn't exist,' says Alex [Filippenko]. 'The carbon in our cells, the oxygen that we breathe, the calcium in our bones -- all were cooked up in the stars and expelled in to space by these explosions.'
"The heat and pressure in stars fuse simple atoms, tiny particles of matter that make up everything we see, into other, more complex atoms. Without supernovae, these larger atoms, such as carbon and iron, would stay locked inside the stars forever. But when supernovae explode, they scatter these atoms throughout space.
"Eventually the atoms created in supernovae swirl together like water in a whirlpool to form stars and planets, such as Earth. Carbon and other atoms come together to make up our bodies and the bodies of the plants and animals we see around us. Without supernovae, there would be no flowers or forests, no hummingbirds or humans.
"Supernovae are also helping scientists understand a mystery that lurks in space. The discovery of a new substance called dark energy has stunned the scientific world. Until the 1990s, no one knew this strange energy existed. In fact, if you had asked a scientist about dark energy twenty years ago, you would have been told to stop watching so many science fiction movies. In contrast, today astronomers think it's very real."

This stuff is all so amazing! When I consider how little of the information in this book I knew --- when you consider how little of this information anyone knew until recent years -- you come to understand why it is so essential that dated science books be constantly removed from libraries and classrooms in order to make room for such exceptionally engaging, up-to-date, and stunningly beautiful, informational books as THE MYSTERIOUS UNIVERSE.

"According to Carl Sagan, a well-known astronomer, the total number of stars is greater than all the grains of sand on all the beaches of Earth combined."

THE MYSTERIOUS UNIVERSE is out of this world! Similar to what I've found from reading other volumes of the noted SCIENTISTS IN THE FIELD series, I just learned a wealth of mind-blowing facts -- this time about the universe and matter -- by following an inspirational scientist doing his thing. As noted in the book's fore-matter, Dr. Alex Filippenko is a Berkeley prof who has been voted the "Best Professor on Campus" five times. We trail Alex and one of his student assistants to their nights of observations at the twin Keck telescopes which are perched 13,796 feet above sea level at the peak of Hawaii's Mauna Kea volcano. Then we ride shotgun as Alex heads up to the Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton, to the east of Silicon Valley.

"A teaspoon of material from a neutron star would weigh more than a pile of a billion cars."

It's all in the presentation: I can just imagine how boring this subject matter could have been presented if it had been done Twentieth-century institutional-text style. Instead, you have a work of art that is dominated by the craftsmanship of award-winning photographer Nic Bishop (and whatever higher power may be responsible for setting in motion the process that results in spectacularly stunning supernovae, along with dark energy and black holes). The actual text here takes up roughly thirty percent of the book. The remainder is a rich mix of vivid, captioned photos. The book concludes with resources, bibliography, glossary, and indexing.

Scientists now hypothesize that 96 percent of the universe is composed of dark matter and dark energy. If you only know about the other four percent, you definitely need to take a serious look at THE MYSTERIOUS UNIVERSE.

Great for kids who like computers - -
I already have books one and two in the Hyperlinkz series, so I was excited about getting book three. It's really good! Since I like computers, I like it because it involves a laptop. I think it's really cool that the kids can travel through the Internet that way. I'm looking forward to book four.

The Virtual Life of Lexie Diamond Review

THE VIRTUAL LIFE OF LEXIE DIAMOND is a suspenseful "whodunit" from actress and screenwriter Victoria Foyt, a first novel that effectively covers a wide gamut of emotional ground.

Fourteen-year-old Lexie copes with alienation at school and her divorced parents' disappointment with her computer-driven life. When her mother is killed in a mysterious car crash, Lexie finds credible evidence of foul play and is forced to adapt, change, and grow as person in order to follow the clues.

Lexie's suspicions grow as her father's fiancé shows her dark side after a series of private confrontations, actions which drive Lexie to make contact with her mother in cyberspace. To further complicate her life, Lexie must learn to trust people in "real time;" both her hunky neighbor and a popular "diva" at school, both of whom wish to be her friend.

Foyt adroitly welds the ether world of cyberspace with many common teen issues in both of Lexie's worlds. Her teen protagonist must use her strengths and weaknesses to solve the mystery of her mother's death and to save her father. As a result, the author has created a compelling character and an electrifying story that will hold younger readers until the last page.

A must-read! 5 stars.

Virtual comes to life - H - Ciincinnati
A young reader mystery built around adult themes of disconnection and isolation. Very feminine in its treatment of character's inner life. Would recommend for 7th through 9th grade girls. A light fun read without controversial scenes, or language.

Already Dated and Published in 2007? - Leslie Blount - Addison, IL United States
I picked this book up looking for a tale that a modern teenager could relate to, but instead found a bunch of out of date computer talk and too much spiritual rambling that made no sense. I know many people believe that kids spend too much time online and don't spend enough time making friends, but this girl is just unbelievable. It was like she born right before the story began. If she had lived 14 years of life, she would have to experience at least a few relationships and have a few acquaintances that she could talk to. I also couldn't stand all her rambling about aliens and bubbles and stuff. It was totally unbelievable and went on and on and on....... The topper for me though, was the out of date the computer information. The girl has a GAME BOY!! The Nintendo DS, the successor to the Game Boy was released in 2004 and any kid as computer savvy as Lexie would have only the latest handheld. Plus as far as a could tell, all she does is instant message and surf the internet. Where is her My Space page? The book was published in 2007! The editor should have insisted on an update before this went to print. Any teenager that uses a computer is going to be frustrated by this book's computer information and the weird way Lexie relates to the world.

A teen as appealing as Holden Caulfield - Judith Searle - Santa Monica, CA United States
This is a terrific piece of work, an engaging and original
combination of coming-of-age drama, detective story and magic realism
with strong elements of comedy. Lexie Diamond, the 13-year-old narrator
of the story, copes with the death of her mother, her father's
developing romantic relationship, and insecurity about her relationships
with peers. So compete is Lexie's immersion in the virtual world of
computers and the internet that she sees the world and other people in
terms of computer and web metaphors.
The reader fears for Lexie's mental health at times (because
of her obsessiveness about the cyberworld), but we are made to care as
deeply about her as readers a half century ago did about J.D. Salinger's
Holden Caulfield
Ms. Foyt's courage and sheer nerve are wonderful to behold,
and this book offers great inspiration and understanding to girls at
this awkward stage of life.

A little more effort would have gone a long way... - Jordan M. Davis (ddsparts@icu.com) - Pomona, NY
I buy virtually every video game book that is out there, and this has to be one of the worst ever. The directions given were freuently incorrect (i.e., lefts and rights for getting through mazes were constantly reversed) and on occasion, events were presented out of order. Some maps or diagrams of the puzzles would have been much more welcome than mediocre gray-scale artwork. Honestly, folks, download an online FAQ for help with Beyond the Beyond.
