Star Trek Generations Review

I really suck at this game and would like help to get past the second level where Data is on the away mission..

Star Trek Generations Overview

  • For the first time in a Star Trek game, you will plot your own course through ship-to-ship combat and away missions in this bold new adventure into the unknown. This star-struck guide will lead you there with concise walkthroughs for every mission!
  • Includes detailed maps for every level, character bios, weapons and items
  • Discover the behind-the-scenes story of the development of the game

Star Trek Generations Specifications

Based on the Star Trek: Generations movie, the Star Trek: Generations game puts you in the positions of several of the film's characters, from Dr. Crusher to Jean-Luc Picard, in an attempt to stop Dr. Soran from laying waste to worlds. In his strategy guide, Blaine Pardoe provides several levels of help in the 12 "away missions" that make up the game. At the simplest level there are backgrounds to the characters and additional information on game elements that provide mild hints. Chapter 6 offers lessons in space combat without giving away the solutions to specific fights. The next level of help comes from the maps of each away mission. If you're seeking a greater level of guidance, though, each mission description contains a well-written log entry from the mission leader. There, you'll learn precisely what you have to do, but not necessarily how to do it. For total giveaways, you can always go to the step-by-step walkthroughs.

Scanning for Kids of All Ages Review

Scanning for Kids of All Ages Overview

Most books about Scanning and OCR are written by graphic artists for other graphic artists. Scanning for Kids of All Ages was written by a technical writer with 14 plus years of experience in simplifying complex information into usable knowledge that anyone can understand – librarians, teachers, grandparents, kids, genealogists, and photographers (a digital camera is a scanner, too). The book is based on a course the author taught at a community college for seven years.

This full-color soft cover book is only 56 pages (8.5x11), yet it explains in just enough detail the technical terms you need to know relating to your scanner. These include: OCR, brightness and contrast, sharpen, resolution for scanner and printer, image size, JPEG or JPG, GIF, BMP, moiré, and color depth. Along with definitions, it relates a specific scanner problem (for example, fuzzy images) with the correct image editing tool (Sharpen) to fix the problem.

Simple tables list guidelines for choosing the correct resolution and the best order to use software tools to scan and fix photos, newspaper articles, slides, or art work. Hands-on projects and step-by-step procedures walk you through attaching a photo to an email message, using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software, and the best way to insert an image into a Word document.

Did you know that each scanner has a "sweet spot" where images should be positioned for best results? Histograms will become your best friend and Brightness and Contrast settings will no longer be guesswork. With Scanning for Kids of All Ages, you will feel like an expert even before you are.

Check Out Interactive Storytelling: Techniques for 21st Century Fiction for $12.99

Interactive Storytelling: Techniques for 21st Century Fiction Review

Lots of people have been thinking recently about the holy grail of computer games, that is the melding of good quality stories with fun computer games. On the surface, this seems like it should be easy, get some good writers together with some game programmers and voila, great things should result. This excellent book shows why things are not nearly as simple as they might appear to be.

The book first starts out with a basic summary of story structure peppered with examples from common movies and familiar literature. While this is a review for many, it serves as an easy read for the game programming side of the audience. It also helps establish a language so that everything can be discussed in a common way.

The next section discusses all games, not just computer games and looks at some of the elements that makes these games engaging and entertaining. Also a review for many, but helpful for the author side of the audience.

Finally, the really important section of the book looks at why these areas come into conflict. One fairly basic idea, which is that authors advance a story through conflict in the characters and that if a person has control of a character, they might justifiably choose to avoid conflict puts the author and the gameplayer at odds with each other. Another example shows why the commonly held notion of branching narrative structure has yet to yield a compelling experience.

While many of these ideas seem obvious, it's clear that they are NOT obvious to many of the game designers out there who over and over again fall into the same traps that are described clearly in this book. The great part of this book is that it pulls together these ideas in one place, with a common language for discussion all in a clear, conversational style. While the book doesn't offer a silver bullet solution to the merging of narrative and interaction, it does show clearly where first, naive assumptions can lead to supposed solutions that simply don't work.

This book is for anyone who's interested in the principles of game design from a high level, and not just pushing bits to make the next, best looking, video game. It belongs on the bookshelf along with other great explorations in the field including Chris Crawford's The art of Interactive Design.

Interactive Storytelling: Techniques for 21st Century Fiction Overview

The integration of new technologies with traditional storytelling drives the development of an exciting new kind of interactive story form that will involve audiences as active participants. This book provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of classical story and game structure and discusses the surprising difficulties in bringing these two activities together. With this foundation in place, Glassner presents several ideas for ways to move forward in this appealing quest.

The author's conversational and friendly style make reading a pleasure.

A good book, if you are interested in studying videogame stories - J. Hammer - Honolulu, HI
This book is a great introduction into understanding what goes into writing for mediums other than books. Although the focus is on video game stories, there is enough in there about other forms of media for it to be worth reading for a person not necessarily that interested in videogames.

Dreadful - indulgent and contradictory - Slartibartfast - Australia

I don't know who is writing all these five-star reviews, but I suspect they are by friends of the author. My advice is to listen to the two and one star reviews.

There is little in this 'book' of real value. Many chapters are given over to simple ranting about how bad particular concepts are, without offering any kind of insight or solution.

But the worst sins are the contradictory arguments. In one chapter he decries the use of branching narrative as completely broken and useless, that narratives are not meant to branch - and in the very next chapter he complains about the limited number of choices characters are given in the games he's played!

This is without doubt the shoddiest, most badly-researched book I've ever read. I physically tossed it away, and when I came here to read others reviews, I was unsurprised to hear someone else had thrown the thing across the room too. Believe me, this work demands action.

Let literary darwinism take it's course, and steer well clear.

A deeply flawed introduction to the subject. - Ernest W. Adams - Surrey, United Kingdom
The first part of the book is a decent introduction to both storytelling and games, at least for novices. If you know nothing at all about stories, his discussion of the three-act structure, Hero's Journey, etc. are useful primers. The same is true of his remarks on the basics of game design: challenges, competition modes, scoring systems, and so on.

Unfortunately, Glassner runs off the rails when he starts to talk about combining gameplay with storytelling. He frequently makes theoretical arguments founded in preconceptions from traditional storytelling media, while ignoring the practical experience obtained by professional game designers over the last forty years. His chief argument against branching storylines, for example, is that they haven't caught on in mainstream media such as books, television, and movies. At the same time he acknowledges that branching storylines are one of the most popular ways of doing interactive storytelling on computers. The fact that flipping through book pages and rewinding the VCR is awkward, while a computer can deliver a branching storyline seamlessly, does not seem to have occurred to him.

Worst of all, his perspective seems to be based more upon what he WANTS players to want rather than upon what they actually DO want. He proposes what he calls the "Story Contract," in which the author is granted exclusive control over both the psychology of the main characters and the plot sequence. Having done so, he treats this contract as axiomatic for the rest of the book -- but a good many game designers and players would strenuously object to both provisions.

In addition, the book contains a great many irrelevant digressions into territory with which the author is clearly unfamiliar. He categorically condemns settable game difficulty modes (easy, medium, hard, nightmare, etc.) and airily proposes that all games should include dynamic difficulty adjustment. However, he doesn't address the points that dynamic difficulty adjustment is hard to do well, not necessarily suited to all game genres, and above all, that some players LIKE to choose a difficulty level at the beginning of the game. And what this has to do with interactive storytelling, I cannot imagine.

In short, I second Jonathan Lev's conclusions, though perhaps not in such vitriolic terms. The first two hundred pages are good basic material for first-year undergraduates. The rest isn't much use to anyone who actually wants to build interactive storytelling experiences.

It is about time... - Christopher Stapleton - Orlando, Florida
With so much talk about stories, games and interactivity, it is about time there is such a comprehensive book about the convergence of all these concepts. Andrew Glassner not only captures the present trends and experiments going on in these areas, but has presented an in-depth background and methodology of each. The advantage of this book is that it is from perspective of someone that has pioneered developments in each of these areas. His casual writing style allows us to enter the creative thought process evaluating such diverse examples and creative relationships.

This book is not for everyone. It is a challenging read with such a broad spectrum of references, nomenclature, cultures. How do you get it into one book with the continuity of a single voice? Mr. Glassner seems to have achieved it. Digital interactive storytelling is an emerging art form that incorporates and challenges traditions, conventions and techniques from all story mediums. The book, Interactive Storytelling, becomes an expert roadmap offering a well organized journey through all facets of play, games and stories. It includes critical insights into the challenges and pitfalls of each. If you are serious about participating in the creation of the future of story and interactivity, it is a must own reference. No one book has been able to cover as much at the level of detail needed to be considered an expert reference. Even though there are many complementary books on more focused aspects of story, games and play, this book serves as a central hub of how such various ideas interrelate..

After a life time of earning a living from interactivity and stories, it is good to know you can always learn more. I recommend this book to anybody training or developing content for the future of interactive of entertainment

This was nice......there is a fifth one right? - -
Before I started reading this book I had the impression that It would sum up all of the incidents and all the drama leading up to it. But, I was greatly disappointed. When the book ended I was thinking, did the real ending of the book fall out? Then I turned to page and saw the epilogue, so I thought, "Okay this should sum things up for me." But, It didn't. All it did was to leave me hanging on a string, and wondering if I misread something about a fifth book. I suggest that you don't read it unless you have prepared yourself for dissatisfation. But really, Is a fifth book coming out? Cause if it is, I'll change my review around completely.

Sarah's Page Review

The book Sarah's Page is a good, easy read. The plot is simple and good. The plot is not wonderful, but good and interesting. One factor that made this book an enjoyable read was that it was written all in e-mails. It was a different way of writting and I really liked that. For those of you who liked the book P.S. Longer Letter Later and/or the book Snail Mail No More, I think you would like this book. The characters in this book wre very believable. The book was quite detailed and added a lot of description, which was a nice aspect. The setting played an important role in the plot, for in the book the main character is this girl named Sarah who is from New York and is from a wealthy family has to live on a rustic farm and do chores. The reason why I gave this book a four star rating instead of five was because at times this book seemed to drag on a little, and got off the point. Overall, this book was pretty good. I think it is probably worth a read. I liked the writing style and characters best. I think girls ages 9, 10, or 11 would really enjoy this book. This is a good book.

Sarah's Page Overview

When wealthy Manhattanite Sarah suddenly has to move to her sister's Michigan farm, she communicates with her best friend via e-mail messages that reflect the gradual changes brought about by this new environment.

A Definat Page-Turner - -
Sarah's Page is a wonderful book! The characters have real personality, they're not dull. You discover the story as she e-mails her best friend in New York. She's stuck on a farm with her sister and her sister's husband. Life gets tough, but Sarah is tough to.

Something Very Special - -
Originally I bought this book for my niece who is a Michigander. The weekend it arrived from Amazon, she was off with her parents to a wedding for the weekend. It didn't take her long to read the entire story. This weekend she lent it to me. One day. That's all it took. I couldn't put Sarah's Page down. Not only is it a clever idea, but the story is compelling. Sarah is your best friend or the one you wish you had. (BTW I am 53 years old ;) )

A must read book - -
Thsi book is really good. I have something in comman with the author she went to the same school that I am at now. This book relates to people today. Its a great book for girls who like to surf the web. I would reccomend this book to everyone.

Colorful, but basically expanded rule book - -
This book might be helpful if you either: 1) Bought the Digi-battle card game and didn't quite understand all the rules. 2) Are thinking about getting into the game and are wondering what it involves. 3) Want a lot of cool pictures of Digimon cards.

There are some useful tables in this book, like which cards you need to play to get to the next level in different situations, but they completely ignore all the cards in the booster decks.

The sad thing is that after a few chapters, the book jumps off talking about the TV series, the animated series cards, and completely ignores the game.

A nice introduction to the game, and the checklist is extremely cool, but if you're already a player and looking to enhance your skills, this is not the book for you.
