Super Smart Information Strategies: Find Your Way Online (Information Explorer) Review

In order to be a "smart user" of online information, it is useful to learn how to approach searching for and using information. Take for example, if you want to learn about what kind of pet would be appropriate for your classroom, you not only need to know about what kinds are available, how to take care of them, and perhaps ones that would simply not work out. Most children these days grow up learning about computers at an early age, but do need to be taught about the World Wide Web and its challenges, especially if they want to learn to use it for research purposes.

There are millions of resources out there, but young students need to know how to differentiate the expert sites from the "sites [that] contain information that is incorrect." They need to have a "Web search strategy," learn how to query, and use keywords to maximize the use of a search engine. A search engine is something that will "make up for disorganization by helping us navigate through it." In this book you will learn about web crawlers, links, hits, Google and its ranking system, hyperlinks, how to narrow down a search, you'll learn about subject directories, subscription data bases, intellectual property, and much more. You'll even learn the proper way of writing out a citation should you use a Web resource in a report.

This is an excellent book that will not only help guide the young student around the Web, but will also teach him or her how to be a "smart user" of the information they find. The assumption this book makes is that the reader already knows how to use a computer, but could use some guidance to make their way around the Internet. The material is clear, concise, and very well written. I was impressed by clarity of the material and like the way it impressed upon the reader that the material they find is intellectual property and must be acknowledged as such. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a research checklist, and additional recommended book and web site resources to explore. If you are looking for some "super smart information strategies" for your homeschool or classroom students, this would be an excellent resource!
